“…a well-written, engaging spy thriller.”
--Bookish Asia

When Lance Roven, a software engineer working in Hong Kong, is called back home to his grandfather’s deathbed, his grandfather asks him to handle the contents of a safe deposit box and then does something Lance can’t believe – he speaks Chinese.

This sets Lance off on a trail of clues, following an old map to Taiwan where he meets the beautiful museum researcher Annie Lee. Together they work to uncover a secret buried for 60 years while racing against Chinese spies to find a treasure and forgotten WWII treaty that could reignite a civil war.

The Jade Lady explores the intricate history between the US, Taiwan and China, and the "other cold war" that has existed in the East since the late 1940s with a page-turning plot that will satisfy fans of both thrillers and historical fiction.

I love historical fiction and was a fan of it for years before I even knew what genre I was reading. I hated history in school but found that stories written by the likes of Dan Brown or Diana Gabaldon could excite me and get me interested in the past like nothing else. There are certain eras and regions that I am more interested in than others and Taiwan is one that intrigues me as I lived there as a military kid when I was very young. This brought me to author Patrick Wayland's "The Jade Lady" and it was a fantastic read that I can't recommend enough.

The story of Lance Roven, a computer geek working in Asia who comes back home to see his dying grandfather. This is the catalyst for a pretty awesome adventure from the U.S. back into Asia, and Taiwan in particular. Lance meets a beautiful historian in Taiwan, Annie Lee, who becomes his partner in this quest to uncover the secrets of Lance's grandfather's past. Of course, in stories such as these there is usually someone or some entity that would prefer that past remain buried and this is the case here as well. This is what makes the chase so fun and interesting.

I loved this read and so enjoyed the trip through past and present Taiwan. I felt that the historical elements were very well researched and accurately depicted in the story as I fact-checked a few of them while I read. Am definitely looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

The Jade Lady edition by Patrick Wayland Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

The Jade Lady has the perfect mix of history, politics, romance and drama to keep readers of many genres entertained. There is just enough factual information shared throughout the story to keep me feeling like I was also learning something. Honestly, I couldn't wait to see how the story unfolded, and was grateful I had it on so I could read it whatever chance I got. I'm looking forward to reading more from the author.
Although the story is intriguing and moves along at a good pace, there are many grammatical errors throughout the book. It needed a good proofreading before releasing for purchase. It seems the further along I got in the story, the more errors there were. It was annoying at best. It's too bad because the plot was a good one.
It was a standard thriller--somewhat predictable, but the history helped set it apart. So I did enjoy it for that aspect.
It's election year here. Speculation about who gets in office and what the short and long term effects will be. The Jade Lady did also dealing with similar issues. But looking back and with a new puzzle piece that could be a game changer. A very good read.
For me this story is well written. I did not have any formatting issues on a Paperwhite. I enjoy fiction that has history as part of the story. The Jade Lady involves a short history of turbulent times in China. If a mystery not involving a professional such as a PI, detective, FBI, CIA,,, but a average person then you will enjoy this story.
Anyone who enjoys mysteries and exotic settings will find this book hard to put down. I would recommend it especially to people interested in China and Taiwan and the political intrigue between them. I could see this adapted for an action movie. I look forward to more from this author.
I really enjoyed this novel from start to finish. It was an addicting read, and kept me hooked with suspension from the end of the first chapter. The author is knowledgeable about the cultures and histories he touches on. The information about Taiwan and the political situation there, as well as the scenes in Taipei, were really well done. An excellent read. I hope to see more from Mr. Wayland in the future!
